Giving Hope and a Future in an Otherwise Hopeless Situation
In 2020 and 2021 the school year was interrupted by civil unrest in Haiti and COVID-19. Despite the disruptions, our students were able to finish their school year with a combination of in-person and online learning. This September, they plan to all return full-time to their classrooms. Even though there is still unrest in Haiti, the children have been faithful with their schoolwork and have been doing well in their classes. They anticipate another 4 to 5 students will graduate from High School again this year. Thank you to everyone who has supported these children as they seek an education. Your generosity provides them with hope for a better life. Please consider sponsoring a child that they may have hope for their future and learn the wonders of the Lord! "Tell to the children the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done." (Psalm 78:4) 189 Children, 109 Pregnant Women, and 553 Adults Served Thanks to your generous support, our mission partner, Mission:Haiti, was able to set up the second COVID-19 clinic to help fight the virus. We received the following update from Lophane Laurent: Blessings to everyone. We give thanks to God for His protection and His blessings through Mission:Haiti. It was hard for us, but with God, we made it. I want to thank God first, and secondly, I want to thank all of the members of Mission:Haiti and Lutheran Church Charities and especially our sponsors and donors. I am blessed because God chose me for this work. During our mobile clinic, we served 189 children, 109 pregnant ladies, and 553 adults, and 35 people received the word of God in their life. Thanks to everyone, and I can tell you we saw more people with fever, infection, cough, and high blood pressure. I am so sorry to tell you that most of the hospitals are closed, and you can imagine how it is so hard for someone to see a doctor when they are sick.
Lutheran Church Charities continues to work with our Mission Partners Mission:Haiti and Ministry in Mission to send your donations to purchase and distribute desperately needed supplies to help save and improve the lives of the most vulnerable Haitians. We received the following update from Lophane Laurent after he distributed food to those in need: Greetings everyone from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I want to thank all of you my friends for continuing to support my Haitian people. Tomorrow (Sunday, May 29) will be Mother’s Day in Haiti. And it will be a big day for the Haitian mothers. So today Mission:Haiti distributed food to 80 families. They received a package of food for 3 or 4 days and I can tell you this is more like a Thanksgiving blessing for them, they asked me to tell you that. Thanks so much in their names. You can imagine how a small bag of 50 lbs of rice cost $30 and a gallon of oil $15 and a package of spaghetti cost $17 and a case of milk $20. Now 60 to 70% of people don’t have a job because most of the businesses are closed or moved to the Dominican Republic so you can imagine when Mission:Haiti and Lutheran Church Charities supports a food distribution what you are doing for them, it’s a lot. I want to say thanks to all of our donors and sponsors and all of the members of LCC and Mission:Haiti for their love and prayers. Next week our team will visit three different places to do mobile clinics for people who couldn’t afford to go to see a doctor because they do not have money and now because they kidnapped too many doctors and nurses and medical staff so most of the hospitals are closed and the government doesn’t even pay the staff. May God bless you all my friends and bless your families and ministries. Have a great day in the Lord! Blessings, Lophane The needs in Haiti are great and ongoing. Please prayerfully consider making a monetary donation to enable Lutheran Church Charities to continue to send funds to Haiti.
LCC received the following update from Jackie Rychel, Ministry in Mission.
The Center of Refuge orphanage in Beaudouin, Haiti, thanks the generous donors for the much-needed mattresses. As you can see these happy faces couldn’t wait to unload the truck and the mattresses on the bunk beds. Ministry in Mission values the partnership of Lutheran Church Charities to help with the important mission work in Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Please continue the support to help us replace mattresses for the Jacmel Lutheran home for the elderly. They are in need of 12 new mattresses. Jackie Rychel On Tuesday, April 19, around 4:00 a.m., a fire broke out in the Beaudoin market, the largest public market in Jacmel, burning through goods and leaving scores of vendors and customers devastated. According to residents, the supermarket inferno erupted and quickly spread to one side, completely destroying it. Area residents said they watched in disbelief as the blaze took hold. The initial estimate was that 40% of the goods in the market were destroyed. There will be considerable economic consequences for the vendors and the community. Twenty families from our partner church, The First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Jacmel, have been directly affected by the fire. They have lost thousands of dollars in goods as well as their livelihood for the foreseeable future. Please consider a generous donation to help these families as they recover from this devastating fire. Additional Funds Needed to Set Up Three More Medical Clinics in Haiti to Help Fight COVID-194/26/2022
513 Adults and 205 Children Served So Far at Three Locations Thanks to your generous support, our mission partner, Mission:Haiti, was able to schedule the first three COVID-19 clinics a few weeks ago. Because of the clinics’ huge success, the medical staff saw twice as many people as they expected and need an additional $2,500 to purchase more supplies for the remaining three clinics. They are anticipating serving an average of 300 patients at each location. Please prayerfully consider a generous donation to support these life-saving clinics as Haiti continues to battle COVID-19. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of our Haitian brothers and sisters! Through your generous donations, LCC has been supporting teacher salaries in the Jeremie District. We received the following update from our mission partner, Sue Gross, with the Haitian Lutheran Mission Project (HLMP). Your donations have made a huge difference in the lives of so many families in Fond Rouge and other villages in the Jeremie District. Hundreds of children whose parents cannot afford to send them to public school are attending our seven schools because you have kept them open. Many lives have been improved, and some saved because you cared enough to keep the HLMP working in Haiti for the past 15-plus years. All of our schools are in the farthest southwest portion of the island. There is only one road from Port au Prince that can take you there. It is a rather isolated area and difficult for other relief organizations to get to. Most Haitians have never even been to Jeremie. Even today, most families have no electricity or indoor plumbing. Our school meals are still cooked over wood fires behind the school, and water is brought to them in buckets from the river or a community well in the village. Many children attend school barefooted and hungry with no school supplies, but they are eager to learn, so the HLMP feels keeping the schools open is the very least we can do. "For those who have been given much, much will be expected."(Luke 12:48). Even though the last two years have been difficult for many here in the United States, it cannot compare with life in Haiti. Please open your hearts to those who are in need. Blessings, Sue Gross Haitian Lutheran Mission Project We received an update from Lophane Laurent, who was able to schedule the first three COVID Clinics in Haiti thanks to your generous support. He is planning to hold the next three clinics next month. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of our Haitian brothers and sisters! I want to thank God for safety during our first three days of clinics. I can tell everyone that it was three days of blessings. We did the clinics in three locations and I shared the gospel with the public who come to the clinic. In each place, I took a few minutes to talk to them about our salvation and why Jesus died for us, and what the blood of Jesus represents for us. I shared a few small catechisms with them to teach them first. A little boy came to me at the clinic and asked me for a small catechism because he wants to share the gospel with his friends in his neighborhood, especially those whose parents are not Christian, and I asked him how old he is and he said to me 12 years old. His parents can’t afford to send him to school since they are not working for two years. I took his information and told him I will contact them next week to visit them. So it was a blessing for the three locations and a success also. During the three days, we served 205 children from 3 months to 17 years old and 513 adults. We started at 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. I will plan for next month for the three other locations. Please keep my Haitian team in your prayers because they did a good job and I am very proud of them. Thanks to all of our sponsors and donors who never stop supporting us. We love you so much and we know how you love us also. May God bless your families and your ministries. Blessings, Lophane Because of your generous donations, we were able to send funds to our mission partners Mission:Haiti and Ministry in Mission.
