Twenty LERT Team Members Attend Rigging & Knots Training

6/26/2018

On Saturday, June 23, Lord of Life Lutheran Church in LaFox hosted an Advanced Chainsaw Training – Rigging and Knots. Co-led by Lutheran Church Charities Advanced Chainsaw Team Leaders Derek Kowalczyk, Ed Boerman, and Steve Chester, this training was developed by LCC as a mandatory pre-requisite for the upcoming Boom Lift Operation and Safety training.

Advanced Chainsaw LERT team members attended representing:

Cross, Yorkville
Immanuel, Freeport
Lord of Life, LaFox
Prince of Peace, Palatine
St. John, Wheaton
St. Peter, Hampshire
Trinity, Lisle
Trinity, Roselle

The training was very informative including hands-on practice with many types of ropes and safety equipment available to practice various knots and tree rigging techniques. Having good and effective safety practices is vital information for our LERT volunteers to utilize when removing trees after storms.

Southern California Road Trip

6/26/2018

Comfort Dogs Reuben and Aaron on the Road Again!

LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Reuben (First Lutheran – Yuba, California) and Aaron (St. John’s – Napa, California) began their journey on June 19. Along with their handlers, they drove down to southern California for three events.

The first stop was in Ojai, California, at Royal Family Kid’s Camp for Foster Children. They spent the day with 30 amazing campers and their counselors as they had story time, swimming, crafts and games. It was a privilege to share the love of Jesus with so many.
Our second stop was at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Santa Clarita, California for their Vacation Bible School (VBS). The children chose the LCC K-9 Comfort Dog ministry and teams Reuben and Aaron for their mission outreach this year. Pastor Joe agreed to do the “ice bucket challenge” if the children raised over $1,000 for the Comfort Dog ministry. Well, the children ended up raising over $1,400 for us to benefit the ministry! Pastor Joe was such a good sport as he was drenched with a bucket of ice and cold water.

One of the highlights of the visit was meeting a sweet boy who was grieving the loss of his golden retriever. He touched their hearts when he said, “Reuben and Aaron are like furry medicine!”

Finally we visited St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Orange, California, for their special event, “Servant Sunday.” Comfort Dogs Reuben and Aaron, along with their handlers, were able to meet so many wonderful people and share a bit about our ministry as they put together items to be distributed in their community.

Children Write Thank You Notes to LCC for School Visit

6/26/2018

Last week, LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs were invited to visit the students at Parkland Preparatory Academy in Streamwood, Illinois. This week, the students showed their appreciation by writing thank-you notes back to their furry visitors: K-9s Tobias (Lord of Glory – Grayslake, Illinois) and Zippy (Trinity – Roselle, Illinois) along with Kare 9 Brutus (LCC Squad) and Comfort Dogs-in-Training Sage and Myra.

“My favorite part of seeing comfort dogs was when Zippy put her head on my lap.”

“My favorite part of seeing the comfort dog was Sage’s fluffy fur.”

“My favorite part of the field trip was getting the [comfort dog] cards.”

“My favorite part of seeing the Comfort Dog was meeting the new dog in training.”

“My favorite part of seeing the comfort dog was petting Sage.”

McHenry LERT Assists With Water Damage

6/26/2018

Bruce Preston, Alan Holm and Ron Jones from the McHenry County LERT team helped a few homeowners in Holiday Hills, Illinois, sandbag after the heavy rains last week. LCC Disaster Response provided the LERT team with a pump to provide further assistance if needed. Team members are expecting to be busy again soon, with another heavy round of rain predicted later on this week

Gloria Dei Lutheran Passing of the Vest for LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Joy

6/26/2018

On Sunday, June 24, Joy Comfort Dog was officially welcomed into the LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas, as the eighth LCC K-9 Comfort Dog placed in the Lone Star State. Five other Texas LCC K-9 Ministry teams came together at Gloria Dei to celebrate Joy Comfort Dog’s Passing of the Vest: Elijah (Our Redeemer – Wichita Falls), Pax (St. Paul – Fort Worth), Abner and Martha (Bethany – Austin), Damaris (Memorial – Katy) and Gabriel (Messiah – Houston). Two ministry teams who are currently in process, Trinity Klein (Spring, Texas) and Messiah (Plano, Texas), were also represented.

It was a morning of worship and fellowship as the vest was passed in all three services. Between services, the Comfort Dogs and teams enjoyed spending time with worshipers, community members, and some faithful Facebook followers who came to be a part of the morning. Joyful is a great word to describe the morning and Joy Comfort Dog’s reception into the LCC K-9 Ministry at Gloria Dei.

LCC K-9 Ministries Welcomes Trinity and King of Glory Lutheran Churches

6/26/2018

Last week, the LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry was expanded with the addition of Trinity Lutheran Church in Orlando, Florida, and King of Glory in Elgin, Illinois. These two teams worked hard learning dog handling skills, the LCC mission, and how to share the light of Christ with others.

Isaiah 43:10  “You are my witnesses,” declares the Lord, “and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am He.”

Trinity Lutheran Church was excited to meet and train with their LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Peace. Peace and her handlers will be a part of the LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry and LCC Kare 9 Military Ministry.
LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Peace’s Bible verse is Hebrews 12:14 “Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.”

Trinity’s handlers and ministry partners are able and willing to serve those who are suffering and in need in Orlando, Florida, and the surrounding communities. The handlers will bring a little peace to many people who God has called them to serve.

LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Julia met and trained with her new King of Glory Lutheran Church handlers. The King of Glory team is excited to work with Julia doing outreach ministry. Julia will be triple-vested as a LCC K-9 Comfort Dog, LCC Kare 9 Military Ministry Dog, and LCC K-9 Police Ministry Dog.

LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Julia’s Bible verse is Romans 8:38-39 “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Lutheran Church Charities is blessed to welcome these two churches to the LCC K-9 Ministry. We ask that you keep the teams in your prayers as they go out to serve others in the name of Christ to bring the Mercy, Compassion, Presence, and Proclamation of Jesus Christ to those who are suffering and in need.

LCC K-9 Ministry welcomes the following new handlers:

Summer of Serving Week

6/26/2018

On Thursday, June 21, LCC Kare 9 Military Ministry Dog Brutus and Veteran Gene were invited to Rejoice Lutheran Church in Geneva, Illinois to be a part of their Summer of Serving (SOS).

The Summer of Serving is a summer long event that Rejoice Lutheran Church organizes for children of their congregation and community. Every day for a week, children prayed, sang songs, studied God’s Word, and participated in acts of service.

Rejoice Lutheran Church invited the LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry to explain how it serves people who need mercy and compassion. Kare 9 Brutus was the center of attention, bringing love and comfort to the children and adults.

Cruise Night

6/26/2018

This past Wednesday, June 20, the LCC Kare 9 Military Ministry helped kick off the 2018 Daily Herald Cruise Night Series at Stratford Square in Bloomingdale, Illinois. A variety of approximately 200 classic cars were on display. Hundreds of people came to admire them.

Kare 9s Butch, Britta, Reba, Brutus, Brandy, and Blitz (LCC Squad) were excited to greet the auto enthusiasts and the Kare 9 veteran handlers shared the LCC mission with many adults and children

TLC Bielenda Camp

6/26/2018

On Tuesday, June 19, LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs visited the TLC Bielenda Camp in Lombard, Illinois. This camp is for children with cancer or who have survived battling cancer. LCC Kare 9 Military Ministry Dog Brutus (LCC Squad) joined with LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Tobias (Lord of Glory – Grayslake, Illinois) and Eve (St. John’s – Lombard, Illinois) met and greeted the campers.

“This,” one counselor noted, “is the highlight of this week.”

Both campers and camp counselors loved meeting the LCC K-9s, receiving love and comfort in return.

TLC Camp provides a week of fun camp activities for children with cancer and a sibling. It was established in 1983 and is the only camp in Illinois that allows siblings to have a shared experience. The camp is geared toward children 5 through 13 and it is the camp’s goal every year to allow campers to attend free of charge.

LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Deploying to Visit Displaced Children

6/22/2018

Little Children Suffering!

Jesus said: "And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me." Matthew 18:5

Jesus said: "Suffering little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 19:14

In Need of Comfort

Two LCC staff and affiliate LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs have been deployed to centers and are currently serving displaced children. Lutheran Church Charities has received invites, and we imagine we will continue to receive invites, for the LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs to be present with children who are displaced from their families because of the current situation. Displaced children are in shelters in at least 15 states. LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry has K-9s in 23 states. LCC does not get involved with the "politics" of events - but we cannot ignore the plight of helpless children who are frightened, alone, and in need of comfort.

LCC will be deploying our Comfort Dogs to the centers and ministries that are housing and temporarily holding children who have come into our country. LCC will not be disclosing the locations of where we will be. We will be working with the many dedicated workers who are taking care of the children.

LCC never charges those we serve. We cover all of our transportation, lodging, and meals by the generous donations of those who believe and support what we do and our Mission - to share the MERCY, COMPASSION, PRESENCE, and PROCLAMATION of JESUS CHRIST to those who suffer and are in need.

Please keep all the children in your prayers as well as all people involved. Thank you for your prayers and support.

Serving Together, Serving Others, in the Name and Presence of Jesus.
