LCC Sends Christmas Presents of Food for Children in Haiti's Tent City

With your donations, Lutheran Church Charities provides scholarships for children in the tent city in Haiti. For many of them, the only good meal they have is at school so when school is on break, they don't get fed. This Christmas, LCC also sent them a Christmas present of food for their families to ensure that they continue to get the food they need on a daily basis.

LCC NID LERT Teams Return to Panama City, Florida, to Continue Hurricane Michael Recovery Efforts

LCC NID LERT teams have been invited by Pastor Ed Brashier, Southern District Disaster Response Coordinator, to return to Panama City, Florida, to provide chainsaw assistance to those affected by Hurricane Michael. Kathy O’Day, LCC Director of Disaster Response and our LERT certified chainsaw teams with heavy equipment will be deploying February 3 - 10 to Trinity Lutheran Church in Panama City.

LCC Donations Arrive at Palm Bay Prep Academy to Help Students on Christmas

Lara McComack presents Kathy Hanson, Administrative Assistant to Principal Dr. Kathleen Fontaine, of Palm Bay Prep Academy in Panama City, Florida, with a check to assist with the post Hurricane Michael needs of students. The Trinity Lutheran Church Food Bank is in the background, where approximately 25,000 residents have received food and supplies.

The Lutheran Early Response Team (LERT) from Trinity Lutheran Church in Lisle, Illinois, coordinated the donations to assist students in need. There are temporary classrooms at Palm Bay Academy due to hurricane damage to the building.

Pastor McComack and Dr. Fontaine wish to express their heartfelt appreciation for continuing to support them and showing them the mercy and compassion of Jesus Christ as they recover from the destruction of Hurricane Michael.

Comfort for Dad on Deployment

On Christmas Eve, December 24, LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Gideon (St. Michael’s – Bloomington, Minnesota) received a surprise. While it was Christmas Eve in Minnesota, it was Christmas Day in the Middle East. Gideon Comfort Dog’s friend, Soph, and her family opened Christmas gifts together via Skype (her Dad is on deployment). He was so surprised when he received the photo of the Christmas boxes they sent to their Dad showing a Gideon stuffie for him. Gideon Comfort Dog can’t go to visit him, but he is thankful there are LCC K-9 Comfort Dog “Stuffed Paws” on the ground in Kuwait to comfort during deployment.

Please continue prayers for this wonderful family as they walk through their time apart.

Prospect Heights Fire & Police Pancake Breakfast

On Sunday, December 23, the Fire and Police Departments in Prospect Heights, Illinois, came together to support families in the community. Families were greeted by Mr. & Mrs. Claus, firefighters, police, and LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Ruthie, Emma, Jacob, and Nigel (LCC Staff).

Firefighters prepared a delicious pancake breakfast and soon after the families met with Santa who had gifts for everyone in the family. The children enjoyed time petting the dogs; for many of them this was their first time.

Arlingtones Perform at 22 Event

The LCC Kare 9 Military Ministry hosted a special "22" event on Saturday, December 22. As a part of the traditional military ceremonies to begin the evening, the Barbershop Chorus, the Arlingtones, performed the National Anthem and the Armed Forces Medley, recognizing each branch of our United States Armed Forces. This was followed by a delicious meal prepared by Chef Kevin and all of the wonderful volunteers who give of their time for the “22” event every month. After dinner, Arlingtones Director, John Davis, led the chorus in festive holiday music. To close the evening, a candlelight moment of silent reflection was followed by a reading of "The Soldier's Christmas Poem" and the Arlingtones leading the assembled guests in singing Silent Night.

An additional highlight of the night was the attendance of World War II Army Veteran, Joe Latala. Joe is father and father-in-law of LC K-9 Comfort Dog Susie's caregivers Barb and Bob Vossel.

LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Greet Travelers During the United Home for the Holidays Event

Nineteen LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs (13 K-9 Comfort Dogs, 4 Kare 9 Military Ministry Dogs, 2 Comfort Dogs in training) and their handlers visited with passengers and crews at United Airlines Terminal 1 at Chicago O’Hare International airport for United Home for the Holidays event. Our Comfort Dogs have participated in this event for the past several years. Greeted with comments of “best day ever” and “I really needed this today” the dogs and their handlers met with thousands of travelers during this busy time of the year.

From all of the LCC K-9 Comfort Dog teams across America, we wish you the most joyous and blessed of holidays!

Arden Courts

On Thursday, December 20, LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs in Training Boaz, Cyrus, Marie, Rahab, and Samson visited with the residents of Arden Courts in Northbrook, Illinois. When the apprentice trainers entered with the Comfort Dogs in training, the room was full of smiling residents and their visiting family members, all eagerly awaiting their turn to meet the dogs. One of the resident’s daughters told us how her mother always talks about the dogs visiting for days after and how much she looks forward to the next one. Each visit ends in prayer and song, such as Jingle Bells, Silent Night, and We Wish You A Merry Christmas.

On Tuesday, December 18, LCC Kare 9 Military Ministry Dog Brutus (LCC Squad) and veteran Gene recently visited Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights, Illinois. Kare 9 Brutus helped the students relieve their stress and anxiety during finals week. The students were thrilled to see Kare 9 Brutus and take advantage of his special kind of love and comfort.

Marine Toys for Tots

On Saturday, December 15, the Lutheran Church Charities’ K-9 ministries participated in the Marine Toys for Tots event hosted by the Deerfield Police Department in Deerfield, Illinois. As members of the United States Marine Corps collected new toys donated by residents of the Deerfield community, they also had a chance to spend quality time with the LCC K-9s. The K-9s helped in collecting new, unwrapped toys in order to help bring the joy of Christmas and to send the message of hope to America’s less fortunate children at this time of year. Those who donated also had the opportunity to give to the Deerfield Food Pantry, which serves residents in the Township of Deerfield, Bannockburn, and portions of Lake Forest, Highland Park, and Riverwoods.

LCC Kare-9 Military Ministry Brutus (LCC Squad), along with LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Hannah (LCC Staff) and Asher (Faith Lutheran – Lake Forest, Illinois), and Comfort Dogs-in-Training Rahab, Marie, Cyrus, and Samson, all enjoyed spending time with the US Marines, US Army, Deerfield and Bannockburn Police officers, 911 Dispatchers, and community members who all made the event a great success.
