TRANSFORMING LIVES IN GHANA

Last week, Rev. John Donkoh, president of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ghana (ELCG), visited Lutheran Church Charities and provided an update on the well-digging and Gospel-sharing work being done with partner Church Without Walls (C-WOW).

Rev. Donkoh included LCC in a series of stops with mission partners in the United States to raise support for new wells and medical clinics.

LCC has supported Donkoh and the ELCG effort for nine years — and because of your generous donations, dozens of wells have been dug, providing much-needed clean water, improved health, safety, and community.

"We are trying to bring people to the saving knowledge of Christ and to also help them to meet their needs, especially in the area of clean water and the medical or health needs of the people.

LCC has been very instrumental, working closely with Church Without Walls, and the churches to be able to provide clean drinking water in the rural areas."

The ELCG has grown from eight congregations in 2018 to 28 congregations in 2024. Providing clean water and medical services through Hope Medical Centers in Gomoa Kumasi and Kintampo have allowed Christ-followers in Ghana to share the love of Jesus in multiple regions of the country of about 34 million people.

When the ELCG goes into a village and drills a well, the impact on lives is immediate and life-changing, he said. More than punching holes in the ground, the ELCG establishes a relationship with the village and, with the help of the village elders, introduces the village to Living Water.

LCC supports the work being done in Ghana through Church Without Walls (C-WOW) to dig wells to provide clean water and build Hope Medical Clinic in Gomoa Kumasi.

We received pictures of the latest well that was dug at Kintampo for St. Patrick Lutheran Church and a tour of the completed Hope Medical Clinic by nurses, government officials, and C-WOW members.

John Donkoh, President of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ghana, and Rob Geiger, C-WOW (Church Without Walls), stopped by the LCC offices and met with Tim Hetzner, Ambassador for Spiritual Growth. Rev. Donkoh is in the United States visiting with mission partners and raising support for clean water wells in Ghana.

Your Donations Drill Wells in Ghana

With your generous donations, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ghana (ELCG) continues to drill wells that bring much-needed water into villages. They recently were able to drill wells in three locations in the Northern Region where the need is greatest.

LCC Thanks Donors for Their Generosity to the People of Ghana

Thank you for your generosity to the people of Ghana. In addition to the next well to be dug, the church members in Tamale in the Northern Region built a cistern to catch rainwater during the wet season. During the dry season, many wells run dry. Locations that have a cistern have access to freshwater when the wells fail. Pictured is Gary Kessler, Church Without Walls, Ghana (C-WOW).

LCC received this update from Rev. John Donkoh, President of Evangelical Lutheran Church Ghana:

C-WOW has the passion of bringing the gospel of Christ to rural areas and try to meet people in their point of need. Since its inception, C-WOW has provided 15 boreholes (clean water) to the less privileged in different locations (villages). The All Nations Lutheran Church - Tamale in the north is one of the new locations where C-WOW has identified to provide this needed water project. The total membership is about one hundred people. The average attendance on a normal Sunday service is about 50.

The Kanvili community generally has water problems, with most people relying on river/dam water which they share with animals. Having a borehole will not only benefit the church but the entire Kanvili community and beyond with good drinking water. The borehole will be used as a means to connect with the community so the gospel can reach them. With the borehole in place, members will now have water to drink and wash their hands when they come to church. When it's fortunate to have a school in the future, it will also serve the pupils/students and the teachers. Should the church have a toilet and urinary one day, it is the borehole they will depend on for water

Financial Assistance Needed to Provide Clean Water and
Spiritual Health through Church Without Walls Ghana

Church Without Walls Ghana (C-WoW) is a Christian organization discipling members in Christian theology in accordance to Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS) teachings. Your donations are desperately needed to help C-WoW serve people in Ghana who have little to no access to clean water wells.

C-WoW serves the communities that it belongs to in various ways to promote good health, education, discipleship, and other needs. Most importantly, while people receive help for their physical needs, C-WoW has the opportunity to attend to their spiritual needs. In villages where there is no source of clean water, the infant mortality rate is 1 in 5. An improvement of 1 in 9 is achieved by either clean water or even a rainwater retention system where a borehole is not feasible. Good medical care goes hand in hand with clean water and that is why building a medical clinic is the next step.

C-WoW’s current project is Hope Medical Clinic being built in Gomoa Kumasi, Ghana. This clinic will serve the health care needs of Goma Kumasi and the surrounding villages. When people come to Hope Medical Clinic (HMC), they will receive the Gospel message from the C-WoW members who will be staffing the clinic, as well as lab work and emergency care as needed. The clinic will include a birthing room for laboring mothers.
