This weekend, the SW Region LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs were represented in Houston by LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Phoebe (St. Paul – Fort Worth and The Summit – Aledo, Texas), Abner (Bethany – Austin, Texas), Damaris (Memorial – Katy, Texas) and Gabriel (Messiah – Houston, Texas). They were there at the invitation of Dr. Ray Page to be the visual part of his presentation to the Texas Society of Clinical Oncology. Dr. Page works in the Fort Worth area and is well acquainted with the work of Phoebe and Pax in the area cancer centers. He hoped that the other doctors would understand how beneficial the Comfort Dogs could be in the health and well-being of their patients and staff. Dr. Page presented clinical evidence to support his conclusion as well as a TV segment that was shot in the Ft. Worth Cancer Center with Phoebe in 2015. Then he presented the Comfort Dog teams. Handlers explained how the program originated, the training and placement of the dogs. They also shared personal stories of working with the dogs in different situations. After the presentation, the group spent time among the doctors, staffs and exhibitors to further explain their work and answer their many questions. We pray as a result of the presentation, more cancer centers will realize the benefits and get in touch with the different teams.
