LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Abraham and Beloved (Trinity - Hicksville, New York) were called to a Lindenhurst Middle School in Lindenhurst, New York, after the recent altercation between two middle school students resulting in severe life-threatening injuries to one of them.
Upon entering the school, the Comfort Dogs were greeted with smiles and sighs of relief. They didn’t even leave the front entrance before the office staff came to greet them. Immediately a few sat on the floor and began petting and hugging Abraham and Beloved. One of the guidance counselors to whom Beloved was drawn to began to cry. She kept telling them how much she needed this. She shared later on that she was able to hold it together all week until Beloved leaned into her.
Word spread pretty quickly that there were dogs in the library. Many students impacted by the incident were brought in throughout each class period to pet and hang out with the dogs. Members of the staff, school board, and Administrators had been made aware that comfort dogs were visiting and made their way over to see what all the commotion was in the library. Many of them were so grateful to have the opportunity to release the emotions of the week they were holding in to be strong for the kids.
One of the psychologists that was in the heart of the situation was also nervous around dogs. She was so grateful to overcome her fear and share her emotions about being the first on the scene in the situation. As the morning went on, it was evident that although it was the staff who thought the students needed comfort from the dogs, it was themselves who needed it as well.
