LCC K-9 Ministry Teams Respond to Emergency Visit Requests

While twelve LCC K-9 Ministry teams served the Benton, Kentucky community, many other dedicated Comfort Dog teams responded to several emergency visits requests last week.

Visitation and Funeral for Firefighter John (Kevin) Hauber

On Thursday, February 1, and Friday, February 2, fourteen LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs provided comfort to the family, friends, and fellow firefighters for John (Kevin) Hauber during his visitation and funeral. John was a firefighter for the Buffalo Grove Fire Department in Illinois and lost his battle with cancer at 51 years old. The LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs have a close bond with the Buffalo Grove Fire Department attending open houses, visits, and helping with our Comfort Dog in training classes.

There were over 500 firefighters that attended the visitation for Kevin (as he was called) from all the surrounding fire departments. The family, especially Kevin’s four daughters, received comfort from ten of the LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs at the funeral of their father. After the funeral mass at St. Mary’s in Buffalo Grove, family, friends, and fellow firefighters gathered for a lunch at the Arboretum Golf Club honoring John Kevin Hauber. At the luncheon, they were greeted by the LCC K-9 Ministry teams who brought a few smiles through the tears to all who so dearly loved Kevin

Prairie Central East Elementary School

On Thursday, February 1, LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Mahlah (Our Savior – Milford, Illinois) and Comfort Dog-in-Training Judith, along with their handlers, brought comfort and furry hugs to the students and staff at Prairie Central East Elementary School in Chatsworth, Illinois, after the sudden death of their after-school supervisor. Mahlah Comfort Dog, along with her handlers, returned on Friday, February 2, for a second afternoon to bring much needed comfort, turning sadness to smiles. One of the students told a handler that she took a piece of Mahlah Comfort Dog home with her ... some fur! Our prayers remain with the students and this community as they continue to heal.
