LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Help Students at Marshall County High School in Kentucky Begin the Healing Process

Upon receiving an invitation from Immanuel Lutheran Church in Murray, Kentucky, and the Marshall County school district, twelve LCC K-9 Comfort Dog teams from five states traveled last week to Marshall County High School in Benton, Kentucky, after a high school shooting took the lives of two students and wounded many others.

As students arrived and entered the school on Tuesday, January 30, they were greeted by all of the teams in the commons area of the high school. The commons area is where students gather coming into school and going to their classes and where community groups gather for different events. It was also the site of the shooting so students were very apprehensive and emotional about returning to that area.

.One student summed up what it meant to have the LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs at the school. She said, “Thank you so much for allowing us to have comfort dogs. They are very comforting and make it a lot easier to be in the school. Petting the dogs makes me feel safe being in the school.”

LCC K-9 Ministry teams also visited classrooms, the auditorium, and the band room where students who needed more time with the Comfort Dogs had the opportunity to spend time with them. Time was also spent with faculty, staff, and first responders who greatly appreciated the LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs and their handlers. Throughout the week, LCC received messages of thanks from students, their families, and staff.
