LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Bring Prayer and Comfort to Santa Fe High School and Community

In the early morning hours of school on Friday, May 18, a gunman entered Santa Fe High School in Texas and shot and killed 10 people, wounding many others before he was taken into custody.
 
As the families learned of the news, the LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs were being invited by Pastor Dan Schumann of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Houston to come to Texas and be with the families and friends of the victims.
 
LCC currently has seven affiliates in Texas and by Friday night's vigil, four were by the sides of families and students: LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Damaris (Memorial - Katy, Texas), Gabriel (Messiah - Houston, Texas), and Abner and Martha (Bethany - Austin, Texas). Gloria Dei is also in the process of getting an LCC K-9 Ministry. Additional LCC K-9 Ministry teams from seven states arrived Saturday and Sunday making available sixteen LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs to be present with those suffering and in need.

Since Friday, the teams have been working with families and others affected by this tragedy at the Family Assistance Center set up by the Red Cross. They have also been working with first responders who bravely and without hesitation came to the aide of students, faculty, and staff.
 
Attending vigils and visiting other schools in the area, the comfort dogs have added much to comfort a devastated community. With prayer, the LCC K-9 Ministry handlers have consoled those grieving everywhere they go. After one encounter, a woman and her daughter remarked, “thank you so much; that was the best thing that happened to me today.”
