LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Bring Hope to a Hurting Santa Fe High School Community

We’ve all heard these statements: “All we have to fear is fear itself” and “Perfect love drives out fear” (1 John 4:18). When the LCC K-9 Comfort Dog teams attended a service in Santa Fe High School last week, they heard the principal, who happens to be a graduate of that school, declare, “The only thing stronger than fear is hope. Santa Fe strong is full of strength and hope for the future.”

For a second week, LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Abner and Martha (Bethany – Austin, Texas), Damaris (Messiah - Katy, Texas), Gabriel (Messiah – Houston, Texas), Pax (St. Paul – Fort Worth, Texas) and Rufus (St. Mark - Edmond, Oklahoma) were honored to serve alongside the Galveston County Critical Incident Stress Management Teams, Texas Department of Public Safety, and others to help the students re-entering Santa Fe High School last week. The high school administration made extensive preparations to protect students from media exposure and allow time in the school to begin to process all that had occurred.

But in the midst of processing, the senior class was preparing for graduation. LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry teams worked in the school between specific groups – high impact students and their parents, senior class graduation preparation, and students just trying to end the school year and pick up their belongings. Teams had the opportunity to work with the students and their parents in large gathering groups as well as one-on-one time with exhausted students who found comfort and warmth to fall peacefully asleep with the dogs. Before departing, we were asked to spend time with a group of parents and students who were waiting to board buses to travel and spend time with President Trump. The Comfort Dogs provided the opportunity for those waiting to concentrate on something else and soothe their nerves.

Plans are already underway for LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs to return to Santa Fe High School to greet students in August. The importance of the LCC K-9 Comfort Dog’s presence was surely understood and communicated to us as the school administration promised to keep in touch for future visits.
