David Vollrath, LERT team leader from Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Elgin, Illinois, answered the call for assistance from the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LCMS) Southeastern District. He traveled to New Bern, North Carolina to help residents still recovering from Hurricane Florence that occurred last September. The town of New Bern sustained a lot of damage during the hurricane.
David spent the week of June 17-21 with a team from Fuller Center Disaster Rebuilders from Washington, D.C., led by Rev. Don Schafer. They tore off drywall, installed new floor joists, sub-flooring, insulation and wall board. The team also built three closets and began the process of taping and mudding. Two members of the crew had no experience in that process, so David taught them the fundamentals. The homeowner appreciated the team’s assistance in the recovery process of his home.
