Your Donations Needed to Support LCC LERT Chainsaw Teams Helping Those in Need During Disaster5/13/2019
LCC has ordered an 18’ x 96” Workhouse Dual Tandem Gooseneck Dump Trailer with 24” sides that our heavy equipment would be able to load with trees and debris safely and efficiently for hauling at a cost of $19,150. It also has slide out loading ramps to load and transport a bobcat, ditch witch, or small tractor to a site for use.
We are blessed to have very dedicated and experienced LERT volunteers who give of their time, talents and financial support to purchase and maintain their own tools, trucks, and heavy equipment. LCC LERT teams are being called to travel and serve in disaster affected areas not only in our own Northern Illinois District, but nationally due to our expertise and available equipment. With increasing requests, this is beginning to take a financial toll on our volunteers and equipment maintenance. LCC does not charge those we serve and will never profit from our service as Christians. We have established a fund to help offset equipment and operating expenses for our volunteers and purchase equipment as needed. Please consider a donation to the Lutheran Church Charities Disaster Response Equipment Maintenance & Fuel Expense Fund so that our LERT disaster response teams may continue to show the mercy, compassion, presence and proclamation of Jesus Christ to those suffering and in need. Join LCC in welcoming LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs-in-Training Jemimah, Claudia, Keren, and Eden! They are a wonderful group of pups who have a lot to learn but are definitely up for the challenge. We have no doubt about it! These puppies are being trained to one day be placed with a church or school to bring the mercy, compassion, presence, and proclamation of Jesus Christ to those who are suffering and in need.

Pastor Ryan Ankersen has committed Good Shepherd to be the long-term recovery center to house, feed and send volunteers to serve in the flood affected communities for the next year as residents begin the rebuilding process. Good Shepherd is now open to individuals and groups who are willing to volunteer. Please go to www.gslcfremont.org and select the Project Restore link if interested in serving here.
Tom Grunow, Director of Financial Generosity and Disaster Response Coordinator at Christ Lincoln, states that needs and collections of supplies have greatly diminished but they continue to inventory what they do have. This weekend they were able to finally get all of the trucks emptied of donated goods and organized into their church, which is still serving as the community warehouse. Many of the items will be used for ongoing recovery efforts. Some items will be given to local agencies who serve needy families, many who have been affected by the flooding in some way, and saw their own donations diminish due to people concentrating on disaster relief the last 6 weeks! They are very glad to be able to serve the community in this way. Please prayerfully consider donating to help LCC continue supporting the individuals and families affected through our churches during their long recovery.
The teams spent the following days at Recreation Center at Northridge, Highlands Ranch, Colorado, where students were transported after the shooting, meeting with students individually and their parents, multiple vigils throughout the area, businesses where students had fled to after the shooting, meeting with youth groups and others impacted by this tragedy.
Deb Heuer, handler for Katie Comfort Dog (Trinity-Fremont, Nebraska) shared a text that she received from a mother after her daughter and son spent over an hour with the dogs at the Recreation Center: Thank you again for being there today. When my oldest son asked me tonight why God would let that happen, I told him that wasn’t what God wanted. I explained that God could be found in the students who were brave, and the first responders, and the caring team of handlers (like yourself) that brought those sweet dogs to us. That’s where we find God and his love.” LCC is grateful for the invitation by Our Father Lutheran Church in Centennial, Colorado, and we ask that you would continue to hold the students, families and communities up in prayer. Lutheran Church Charities welcomes twenty new LERT certified members! On Saturday, May 11, LCC held a Basic LCMS LERT training for new and recertifying team members at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Frankfort, Illinois, led by Kathy O’Day, LCC Director of Disaster Response. There was a total of 31 in attendance, from the following churches and LERT teams in Illinois and Wisconsin: It is good to see how the LCC Disaster Response ministry is continuing to grow with volunteers willing to share the mercy, compassion, presence and proclamation of Jesus Christ in service to those suffering and in need
