$2,000 Needed for Christ the King Graduate to Continue Advanced Counselor Degree to Serve His Community

Lutheran Church Charities received a request from Pastor John Brazeal, Christ the King Lutheran Church and Geri Brazeal, Principal, Christ the King Lutheran School, Chicago, Illinois. They are requesting $2,000 in financial assistance to help a former Christ the King student pay his student loan balance for transcripts needed to obtain a Master of Social Work Degree. He is one of three full scholarship picks from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Jane Adams College of Social Work.

Darrell came to Christ the King Lutheran School 20 years ago as a 12-year-old student who struggled academically. He had many bad breaks in his short life that affected him in many ways.
 
“Darrell’s dad brought him when he was in 5th grade because he was having issues in his school. The Lord worked a miracle in him while he was here and my student began to change. After a couple of months, he came around and was an honor student by the end of the year,” recalls Geri Brazeal.

Darrell graduated with honors from eighth grade and went on to Mount Carmel High School (Chicago, Illinois) on a scholarship. After graduation, he went to Northern Illinois University to study psychology and education. His student loans and grandmother helped him with tuition. Unfortunately, while Darrell was still in college, his beloved grandmother passed away. He also lost his mom to drug overdose and witnessed his best friend get killed.

“With your help, I can pursue my passion to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I will be able to provide group and individual therapy sessions to individuals and families in my community to help them learn how to cope with the various issues they are facing,” says Darrell.
 
“Darrell will be a great asset to our community because he went through and understands many of the issues the families are experiencing. He has served as a mentor for many of our students. He is a blessing to the community. With your gift, he will be able to obtain the necessary training to come back and provide support for the young people in his parish,” says Pastor John Brazeal.
