LCC Disaster Response Staff and LERT Volunteers Clean Up St. John Cemetery's Grounds

Last week, LCC Disaster Response staff Kathy O’Day and Jamie Miller and LERT chainsaw volunteers felled and cleared dead trees and removed dangerous hanging limbs from St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Darien, Illinois.

They used the boom lift and mini-bobcat to safely and professionally complete this work. Pastor Voight and the church volunteer groundskeepers were very pleased with the willingness to make their cemetery safe for those visiting.

They expressed their thanks to the following LERT team members:

When three of Job’s friends heard of the tragedy he had suffered, they got together and traveled from their homes to comfort and console him. Job 2:11

LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Martha (Bethany - Austin, Texas), and Pax (St. Paul - Fort Worth, Texas), and their handlers traveled many hours on Saturday to be there with Lani Meyer at her husband’s funeral in San Antonio.

Lani's husband, George, loved the Comfort Dogs. Years ago, Lani was a member at Immanuel, Belvidere, Illinois. She knew and loved LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Bekah and Kye, and supported the ministry they did in the community.

Lani requested a purple military Heart of Mercy & Compassion and cross for George, who had served in the United States Air Force. Janice Marut and the HMC team at St. Paul, Fort Worth, Texas completed the Mercy Heart and cross and made sure it got to San Antonio on Saturday.

Lani requested the following verse be on the Heart of Mercy & Compassion because that is the one Lani and George turned to when life brought challenges. "I lift up my eyes to the mountains — where does my help come from?" Psalm 121:1

Christ The King Jesuit College Prep High School

On Monday, October 16, LCC Kare 9® Military Ministry Dogs Brutus (LCC Squad) and Nigel (LCC Staff) visited Christ The King Jesuit College Prep High School in Chicago.

Our visit was to bring mercy, compassion and comfort to the students and staff during Depression Awareness Month.

The students and staff loved meeting the Kare 9s and hearing about their work as LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs.

Emergency Site Visit - DeForest High School, Wisconsin

LCC K-9 Comfort Dog® Ministry received a request from Dyanna Kadrich, Director of Student Services from DeForest High School, Wisconsin, for Monday, October 16.

A beloved staff member, Jan Williams, from DeForest High School, is expected to pass away in the coming days. Jan recently retired after teaching for 30 years yet remained active in the school community, subbing at the school and serving as the drama coach. She was directing the school play and was just with the students on Friday.

LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Charity (Brookfield Lutheran - Brookfield, Wisconsin) and Mary (St. Paul's - Janesville, Wisconsin), and their teams immediately responded to the call to be there with the students and staff as they absorbed this sudden and unexpected loss. The students felt the love and support of the teams, who offered them a safe place to share their emotions.

Alsip Fire Department’s Open House

On Saturday, October 14, LCC Kare 9® Military Ministry Dogs Brutus (LCC Squad) and Nigel (LCC Staff) were a part of the Alsip Fire Department’s Open House.

The firefighters displayed how to extinguish a kitchen fire and many other life-saving actions and precautions.

The Kare 9s were loved by many children and adults as they did what they do best: bring comfort and love to those they met.

LCC Hearts of Mercy & Compassion Arrive Safely in Maui

Thank you for your prayers! Yesterday, after traveling over 4,000 miles, 120 hearts and crosses arrived safely at Kahului Harbor in Maui and will be transported to Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Kahului, Maui.

Lutheran Church Charities Hearts of Mercy & Compassion Ministry and Redeemer Lutheran Church, Fort Collins, Colorado, delivered the hearts and crosses to the Orphan Grain Train ministry in Norfolk, Nebraska.

120 Hearts of Mercy & Compassion Are on Their Way to Maui

Last week, Lutheran Church Charities Hearts of Mercy & Compassion Ministry delivered 120 hearts and crosses to the Orphan Grain Train ministry in Norfolk, Nebraska, which are now on their way to Maui.

LCC will return to Maui to partner with Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Maui, and Our Savior Aiea, Hawaii, during the week of November 5th, when they will prepare the Hearts of Mercy & Compassion with the names of those deceased, followed by deploying a group bringing the hearts, along with comfort and care, to this community. Please pray for the successful arrival of these 120 hearts and crosses to our partners in Maui.

Additionally, as the island re-opens to tourism, many of those displaced have received notice that they must vacate current government-sponsored hotel locations. Many are moving in with extended family and friends or will be relocating off the island. This situation will create a greater need for human services in other areas throughout the island.

Lutheran Church Charities continues to partner with the California-Nevada-Hawaii District of The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod and Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Maui to identify and direct all support to these needs.

Thank you for your faithful prayers and support for all of the communities affected by the wildfires during the long recovery process. BE THERE with LCC to show them the love and presence of Jesus!

Elmhurst Fire Department’s Open House

On Sunday, October 8, LCC Kare 9® Military Minisrtry Dogs Brutus (LCC Squad) and Nigel (LCC Staff) and their veteran handlers participated in the Elmhurst Fire Department’s Open House at Station #2.

Hundreds of local friends of the firefighters came to see fire trucks, emergency vehicles, and EMTs. The firefighters showed the people a live demonstration of how to put out a grease fire in the kitchen.

The Kare 9s were loved and hugged by children and adults. Their veteran handlers were given many opportunities to share the LCC mission with those who greeted the Kare 9s.

Fire Safety Event

On Saturday, October 7th, LCC Kare 9® Military Ministry Dog Nigel (LCC Staff) and his veteran handler participated in the Fire Safety Event at the Home Depot in Countryside, Illinois. Firefighters and visitors alike were happy to meet and love Kare 9 Nigel. We also saw a demonstration of how firefighters remove a person from a car involved in a serious accident.

Chicago Police Department Faith in Blue Appreciation Day

On Friday, October 6, LCC Kare 9® Military Ministry Dogs Brutus (LCC Squad) and Nigel (LCC Staff) visited the Faith in Blue Appreciation Day at the District 4 HQ of the Chicago Police Department.

The officers and other vendors were so glad to see the Kare 9s. This was a very encouraging visit, as the officers spoke freely about their faith and how it shapes their duties as police officers. The veteran handlers were able to share the mission of LCC with the officers.

Emergency Site Visit - Loss of Life to Suicide

TavaMae will be forever missed by her mom, dad, family, friends, teachers, pastor, and church family. She was a gift of joy to all those who knew and loved her. We thank God for the time she was here on earth.

LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Candace (LCC Staff), Charity (Brookfield - Brookfield, Wisconsin), Gideon (St. Michael’s - Bloomington, Minnesota), Mary (St. Paul's - Janesville, Wisconsin), and Rhoda (Prince of Peace - Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin) and their handlers, traveled to Wisconsin Rapids to be there with the family and friends of TavaMae during their time of loss and pain. They offered the love, comfort, and compassion that Jesus has given us.

We pray for TavaMae's family and friends whose hearts are heavy with her loss for God's comfort, healing, and peace. No one can ever understand the suffering going on in their mind. But the pain in your heart is a testament to their meaning in this world.

"The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." Psalm 34:18
