On Friday, May 14, LCC Kare 9 Military Ministry Dog Nigel (LCC Staff) and his veteran handler visited John and Eunice Stark in their home. Eunice is in hospice care and wanted to see a comfort dog. John is a USMC WW II Veteran and a US Army Korean Veteran. Eunice was so happy to see a comfort dog, especially a Golden Retriever, since she and John had owned one.
John was presented with an LCC Kare 9 Military Ministry Challenge Coin after telling about his service in two wars. In WW II, John served in the South Pacific with the USMC. In the Korean War, he served as a US Army officer mustering the soldiers out of South Korea. Among his many medals and campaign ribbons, John was awarded the Bronze Star for his heroism in Korea. On Monday, May 10, LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Dinah (Trinity - Auburn, Illinois), Mahlah (Our Savior - Milford, Illinois), and Comfort Dog-in-Training Salome and their handlers were present at Bethel Lutheran Church for the visitation and funeral of Katie King, a second-grade teacher who was killed in a car accident the previous week. Children of all ages were so delighted to be able to interact with the three comfort dogs. The time they spent with the dogs was much needed on this difficult day for both the children and their parents. "It was a blessing and privilege to serve the King family, to come alongside them in their grief, in such a tragic loss. The kids and teachers really responded to the dogs, and it was powerful to see how much the dogs helped comfort their sadness and difficulty understanding the situation. Listening to the kids and just being there to support them was a blessing. I asked some of the girls petting Mahlah what they liked most about Miss King. They said, “she was encouraging. And her smile.” Kami Kimmel, Mahlah's handler "We were honored to bring the comfort dogs to Bethel Lutheran and help the students, staff, family and friends say farewell to Miss King. One of Miss King’s students was afraid to go into the service, and we have offered him a seat by Dinah at the back of the church. Dinah was at this student’s feet, and he was able to hear the message of how Miss King loved her students and that the student had to carry on being the 'brave one.'" Roxanna Seifert, Dinah's handler
