The LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs were invited by school administration officials at Jennings County High School in North Vernon, Indiana, after the death of a student in a car accident and another student who had died suddenly just days later. Beginning on Monday, April 2, LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Mercy (Our Savior – Louisville, Kentucky), Naomi (Holy Cross – Indianapolis, Indiana), and Barnabas and Isaiah (Trinity – Hobart, Indiana) met with students and faculty over two days this week to help comfort them after the loss of their friends and classmates.
Please join LCC in keeping those impacted by this sudden tragic event in your prayers and if moved, please support our teams through the K-9 Travel Fund. ![]() On Tuesday, April 3, LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Barnabas (Trinity – Hobart, Indiana), Bethany (Trinity – Danville, Illinois), Dinah (Trinity – Auburn, Illinois), Mahlah (Our Savior – Milford, Illinois) and Julia (Comfort Dog in Training) visited the elementary school of a student who was killed in an automobile accident along with two siblings and his mother in Texas. The group of K-9s and handlers were invited to Kenwood Elementary School in Champaign, Illinois to bring love following the tragedy. Jessica Brokish, 41, and her children — sons Finn, 9, and Liam, 6, and 2-year-old daughter Amelia — were pronounced dead at the scene of a five-vehicle collision Friday morning, about 100 miles east of Dallas. LCC K-9 Ministry Teams had visited with classmates of Liam last week at Carrie Busey Elementary in Savoy, Illinois. Please continue to pray for the family, students, staff and faculty as they mourn the tragic deaths of this family. ![]() Rev. Don Love of Calvary Lutheran Church in Watseka and the Iroquois County Emergency Management Agency has asked for more LERT volunteer assistance to help congregation members and residents of Watseka, Illinois, still trying to clean up from the February flooding. Kathy O’Day, LCC Director of Disaster Response, LCC DR staff, and LERT team members will be partnering with the Central Illinois District of the LCMS for another muck-out workday on Thursday, April 5. We will be doing muck outs, power washing of basements, removing carpet, drywall insulation and debris removal from homes damaged by the historic flooding in February. We will also be able to provide mold remediation with the foggers and disinfectant recently purchased. This community has been hard hit and homeowners are struggling to recover. LCC LERT volunteers will continue to share the mercy, compassion, presence and proclamation of Jesus Christ with those who are suffering and in need who are feeling exhausted and discouraged. ![]() Pastor John Brazeal and Principal Geri Brazeal of Christ the King Lutheran Church and School (Chicago, Illinois) request your financial assistance for a third grade boy who attends Christ the King Lutheran School. After a week of searching for Zayd, Pastor Brazeal learned from the police department that the child was found wandering around Midway airport. Zayd’s mother, who is mentally ill and suffers from bipolar disorder, had been hospitalized but refused to take her medication. After leaving the hospital during a mental health breakdown and thinking Zayd was Satan, she kicked him off an elevator, abandoned him, and left for Louisiana. The police and DCFS have placed Zayd in the care of his 80 year old great grandmother who is living on a meager fixed income. Christ the King asks your help to assist her with the additional cost of raising a child: food, clothing, medical care, and keeping Zayd in the Christian School at Christ the King with its nurturing environment. $2,500 will cover most of these expenses. Help be Christ to Zayd and his widowed great grandmother. As Jesus said “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19:14 Please keep Zayd, his great grandmother, and mother in your prayers. LCC LERT Volunteers are the Hands and Feet of Jesus While Helping Residents in Jacksonville, Alabama4/3/2018
She snatched up the baby and took cover in the bathroom just as a large evergreen fell through the roof directly over the bed she had been in with her baby. Each time she told the story all could see the hand of God protecting her. In her words, “No one was hurt! Praise God!” Her husband also worked with this team for two days removing the tree from their roof and clearing other trees from their property. They were very grateful for the help they received from the LERT teams.
At another home, a widow and her daughter had several large trees come down around their home and yard. They also had a 30’ tree that was dangling near their home and electrical wires. They were able to tie ropes to pull and insure the tree fell where it was safe while removing it with chainsaws. As the tree fell and hit the ground both women began to cry. Steve Chester went and talked with them immediately and they said, “I have not cried since my husband/dad died 18 months ago. This is beautiful what you guys are doing for us.” This team worked at their home for four days removing trees, branches and the stumps. She told all who came by her home that “She had nine angels working in her front yard.” These are just a few examples of how LCC LERT volunteers serve as the hands and feet of Jesus to individuals recovering from a disaster. LCC thanks all of our LERT volunteers for their continued dedication and compassion. Please continue to keep all those impacted by the Jacksonville, Alabama tornado in your prayers. LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Tobias (Lord of Glory – Grayslake, Illinois) and Top Dog Jenni Hoffmeyer received a thank you note from a social worker they met during visits at Pine Trails Park following the LCC K-9 Ministry deployment to Parkland, Florida:
I just wanted to write a quick note to say thank you for all the work you and your team did while you were with us. Your impact continues to have a lasting impression on myself and all those you touched. I know that I said this before but I want to reiterate that it is not only the presence of the dogs but the presence of the handlers that made all the difference. I thank you for your dedication to the work you do, the professionalism that you do it with, and the true love you exude while doing it. Thank you for being present and supporting the grief process and not being interruptive of it. I pray that there is not another crisis like ours, however if there is, I pray that they are able to benefit from your love and services as we did. With a grateful heart, Michele Myette Licensed Clinical Social Worker LCC received the following email on March 26 from Immanuel Lutheran Church in Downers Grove, Illinois: Dear Lutheran Church Charities and the Comfort Dog Ministry, Thank you so very much for being at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Downers Grove on March 22nd and 23rd for the visitation and funeral for 12 year old Laine VanHoutan. Laine suffered from a hereditary disease called "Batten's Disease." She was diagnosed with the condition at an early age along with her brother, Noah, who passed away two years ago. It is a devastating disease and children rarely live past 12 years old. Laine's family withstood the losses of two of their children with grace and faith knowing that Noah and Laine are resting in the arms of Jesus, made whole again! Thank you to all of the handlers and the sweet dogs (too many to name!) who gave some of their time to come and comfort those of all ages. Your ministry is so special to those who just need a little bit of "softness" in a sad and stressful day. We can never thank you enough! Easter Blessings!
