Eddie the Comfort Dog Helps People with Memory Loss

LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Eddie (Peace Lutheran – Grand Island, Nebraska)

Eddie the Comfort Dog is trained in Grand Island. He made a special visit to the CountryHouse Thursday afternoon.

Eddie hops up on an ottoman in the middle of a room, and residents sit in a circle around him. They can pet him, or just sit back and enjoy Eddie's presence.

One resident said Eddie reminds her of times spent with her dog Patches.

"Some people don't know how helpful it is to see a nice, gentle dog," said Dorothy Schwieger, a resident at CountryHouse. "Makes you feel comfortable, I would say. He's just a nice, gentle dog. Very well trained. I think it's nice to have a nicely trained dog too."

Kids who have more than one stuffed animal have a hard time deciding exactly which fuzzy animal to bring to the Bear Fair.

“It’s always a big production,” said Caleigh Heeg, who brought her two daughters to the annual Bear Fair on Tuesday at Grand Island Public Library.

One mom brought her youngest child’s teddy bear, and also the bear of her second-grader named Madison.

Even though Madison was in school, she “didn’t want to miss out,” her mother said.

Every Thursday Lutheran Church Charities Apprentice Trainers travel locally and from across the state to Grand Island to work with the dogs.

These trainers help prepare the dogs to get them ready to be sent out to Lutheran churches across the country.

Today nationwide there are more than 120 dogs in the program.
