United Inflight Services celebrates International Flight Attendant Day with K-9 Comfort Dog visitIt was a day for those who serve, care, and help — at 30,000 feet. Flight attendants with United Airlines at Chicago O’Hare International Airport experienced comfort, relief, and peace during a special International Flight Attendant Day visit from the LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry teams. International Flight Attendant Day recognizes the dedication, compassion, and resilience of airline employees who serve travelers every day. Last Friday, United Airlines hubs around the country celebrated their flight attendants, but the O’Hare hub received an extra boost from LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Bethesda (St. Matthew – Hawthorn Woods, IL), Gethsemane (Lord of Glory – Grayslake, IL), Samson (Zion – Marengo, IL), Shadrach (Prince of Peace – Palatine, IL), and Tobias (Lord of Glory – Grayslake, IL). Together, they presented a Heart of Mercy & Compassion (HMC) to express thanksgiving for the role they play in millions of people’s lives. Additionally, the Comfort Dogs lingered a while to make sure moments of wellness, stress relief, and encouragement were felt. Flight attendants and airport staff work in fast-paced, often emotionally demanding environments, and appreciation for their work honors their dedication. As the Comfort Dogs and their handlers walked through the terminal, smiles appeared instantly. Employees paused from busy schedules to pet the dogs, share stories, take photos, and simply breathe for a moment. The calming presence of the dogs created an uplifting atmosphere throughout the event and opened the door for meaningful conversations and personal connections.
One especially moving moment came when the teams presented the HMC to several flight attendants. For some staff members, the gesture brought tears to their eyes. Earlier that day, two flight attendants had experienced a particularly difficult situation after a passenger on their Minneapolis flight suffered a medical emergency. The Comfort Dogs provided a much-needed moment of peace and emotional support after an incredibly stressful experience. Another flight attendant shared that her own dog had passed away just the week before. The team was able to comfort her with a stuffed comfort dog and compassionate conversation during her time of grief. One handler reflected on the emotional impact of the visit: “We had three flight attendants suddenly in tears because they had all lost their own dogs recently. One started and the other two followed. We gave them stuffies and had a little therapy session with each showing us photos and telling us about their dogs. It was very similar to Great Lakes Naval Base, where the sailors frequently get emotional because they miss their own dogs. This is a very nice event. It’s really fun to see everyone’s reactions to all the beautiful Goldens walking through the airport.” Through simple moments of presence, conversation, and comfort, the visit became more than a celebration — it became an opportunity for healing, encouragement, and genuine human connection. Every visit, conversation, and moment of comfort shared that day was made possible by compassionate supporters who continue to sustain this ministry’s presence in places like O’Hare.
