In the Wake of Tragedy, God Sends Comfort

Finding Hope in the Midst of Heartbreak

Two tragedies. Two schools. Two grieving communities hundreds of miles apart, yet both enveloped by the same heartbreak—and the same need for God’s love, comfort, and presence.

This past week, the LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry responded to heartbreaking losses in Illinois and Wisconsin, offering gentle companionship, a listening ear, and God’s presence through their ministry of comfort.

Remembering Jordan: A Life That Touched Many

When students and staff at Wredling Middle School in St. Charles, Illinois, returned from Spring Break on Monday, they were met with devastating news: eighth-grader Jordan (pictured) had been killed in a car accident near Indianapolis on Friday night as his family returned from vacation. His 12-year-old sister, Riley, was also injured but has since been released from the hospital. Their mother was driving, and the grandparents were in the car but not injured.

Jordan was known as a quiet but funny young man—one whose silly side shone brightest with his close friends. He played football, ran track, and enjoyed Minecraft. His sudden death left classmates stunned and grieving, many for the first time in their young lives.

To bring comfort in the midst of sorrow, LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Julia (King of Glory - Elgin, Illinois) and her handler—regular visitors to Wredling—were there to support the community. They were joined by LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Jael 9Trinity - Hobart, Indiana) and Michael (LCC Staff) and their teams, who sat quietly with students and staff, offering calm and comfort without words.

One particularly poignant moment was with Jordan’s girlfriend, who visited the dogs several times throughout the day. She sat silently beside them, letting their presence and affection speak what words could not.

Mourning Owen: Love That Brings People Together

While the teams were ministering in Illinois, other LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry teams for Comfort Dogs Charity (Brookfield Lutheran - Brookfield, Wisconsin), Dora (Lutheran High School Association of Greater Milwaukee - Milwaukee, Wisconsin), Mary & Rejoice (St. Paul's - Janesville, Wisconsin), and Tobias (Lord of Glory - Grayslake, Illinois) were deployed to Hamilton High School in Sussex, Wisconsin, following the death of junior Owen Briggs in a tragic automobile accident after practice.

As students gathered to process their grief and reflect on two recent vigils, the Comfort Dogs provided a safe space for emotions to surface. From spontaneous hugs to tearful laughter, students expressed how much the dogs' presence meant:

“This makes me so happy.”
“It’s so calming.”
“I’m at peace.”
“Thank you for bringing them—it means a lot.”

Several of Owen’s close friends shared heartfelt memories, reminding handlers of the deep bonds formed through friendship and loss. One touching moment came when Dora and her handler spent time with a friend of Owen’s, who quietly shared, “Even though this is a terrible thing, it’s bringing people together. There’s good coming from something so bad.” The handler noted the maturity in those words—spoken from the heart of a grieving 16-year-old.

Comfort That Reflects the Heart of God

The deaths of Jordan and Owen deeply impacted their school communities. The LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry teams were called to be present, to listen, and to offer peace not only through the dogs but through the love of Christ.

In these moments of darkness, God sends His comfort in tangible ways. Through the presence of these compassionate teams, the love of Christ reaches broken hearts—reminding us that even in sorrow, we are never alone.

“God still works to shape wholeness out of the chaos.”

As we face the pain of loss, we lean into God's promises and find strength to take the next step. One day at a time. One breath at a time. One moment of comfort at a time.
