Here’s how the CARES Act changes deducting charitable contributions made in 2020: Previously, charitable contributions could only be deducted if taxpayers itemized their deductions. However, taxpayers who don't itemize deductions may take a charitable deduction of up to $300 for cash contributions made in 2020 to qualifying organizations such as Lutheran Church Charities. The law changed in this area due to the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act. For people who do itemize their deductions, the new law allows for cash contributions to qualified charities to be deducted up to 100% of their adjusted gross income (up from 60%) for the 2020 calendar year. Christmas Sharing is a 51-year partnership of nine churches in Wheaton and Warrenville, Illinois, and the D200 school district. The schools' social workers identify families that need assistance, and invite them to participate in the Christmas Sharing program. Normally, the families go shopping for shoes, boots, clothing, household items, toys, and food at the churches on the second Saturday of December. This year, due to COVID-19 restrictions, it was a drive thru pickup of gift cards and food. St. John Lutheran, Gary Methodist, and Trinity Episcopal churches in Wheaton were partners at the St. John property as one of the three distribution sites.
Many St. John, Wheaton L.E.R.T. and other church volunteers served nearly 400 families directing traffic flow, registering families, loading boxes into vehicles, distributing gift cards, and offering prayers. Although everyone was very wet and cold, they all felt it was a great day to show the mercy, compassion, presence and proclamation of Jesus Christ as they joyfully served families in need.
A Mercy Heart was presented to the Shands Hospital ICU Unit 87 staff in Gainesville, Florida, at the request of LCC donor, Gail. Gail requested a Mercy Heart on behalf of her brother, Bill, who had spent 292 days in ICU after a double lung transplant. The heart was given to the ICU staff out of tremendous gratitude from both Gail and Bill who have been shown “blessing after blessing”. As Gail put it, “The nurses, therapists, surgeons, pulmonologists, cleaning people, people who deliver the meals. So many people we have gotten to love and share God’s love and presence. There are no words to thank these incredible people. Their competence, patience, love, friendship, and compassion that we have received is just beyond words”. Gail and Bill’s requested scripture verse on the heart was Deuteronomy 31:6 which reads “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid, for the Lord is with you”. Gail also adds, “My brother is doing well now. With God’s grace, he WILL get out of the hospital. He is my hero with his determination, faith, and love for the Lord”.
