Join LCC as a Friend in Christ to those in Need in Florida

11/7/2017

Deac. Kathy O'Day, LCC Director of Disaster Response, spent a week in Bonita Springs and Immokalee, Florida where she viewed firsthand hidden areas within these communities that remain devastated from the impacts of Hurricane Irma. Condemned housing with extensive mold and even missing roofs covered in tarps are the current living conditions of many clients that the Amigos Center serves.

Working with Pastor Karl Glander, Director of Amigos Center in Immokalee, Pastor Robert Selle, CEO and Founder of Amigos en Christo, and Evelyn Cardenas, Case Manager Amigos Center, Kathy visited residents of these communities to learn more about their struggles, provide financial assistance, and share the mercy, compassion, presence and proclamation of Jesus Christ.
Pastor Glander, Director of the Amigos Center in Immokalee, Florida welcomes Lutheran Church Charities as we have become Friends in Christ with their mission of serving those suffering and in need with the mercy, compassion, presence and proclamation of Jesus Christ. The Amigos Center in Immokalee helps to meet the weekly physical needs of its clients and church members with food and clothing distributions and providing spiritual care. The income earned in the agricultural and construction industry here is below poverty level.
Pastor Karl Glander, Director – Amigos Center, Immokalee, Florida
The Amigos Center is also trying to help those affected by Hurricane Irma, many who have lost their homes and belongings, but they need prayers, volunteers and financial assistance to do this. Please become a friend in Christ to those who are considered the forgotten people living in the “Third World” communities of Bonita Springs and Immokalee.
Pastor Robert Selle, CEO and Founder – Amigos en Christo

Pastor Selle, CEO and Founder of Amigos en Christo, welcomes Lutheran Church Charities as we have become Friends in Christ with their mission of serving those suffering and in need. The Amigos Center in Bonita Springs, Florida provides professional legal aid for immigrants seeking U.S. citizenship.

Since Hurricane Irma, Pastor has hired a case manager to provide disaster case management and advocacy for almost 100 Hispanic and Haitian clients and congregation members who have been hard hit in Bonita Springs and Immokalee. In addition, their buildings in both locations sustained damage in the hurricane requiring repairs. They need prayers, volunteers and financial assistance to make a difference in the many lives they touch with the mercy, compassion, presence and proclamation of Jesus Christ. Please become a friend in Christ to those who are considered the forgotten people living in the “Third World” communities of Bonita Springs and Immokalee.

Small Communities Devastated in Bonita Springs, Florida

Evelyn, the case manager for the Amigos Center in Bonita Springs, showed Lutheran Church Charities a few small hidden Hispanic communities in Bonita Springs that were hit extremely hard by the recent hurricane. Kathy O’Day, LCC Director of Disaster Response, met Antonia who shared what it has been like for her family and community since the storm. The people in this area are just as forgotten as the people in Immokalee, Florida. In this one small community, there are 22 homes, but the hurricane destroyed 12 homes totally and damaged the remaining. All of the remaining families are living in their damaged homes and receiving assistance through the Amigos Center case management. LCC was able to provide gift cards to each of the remaining families immediately and will partner with the Amigos Center to provide further assistance.

Preschool Teacher at Hope Lutheran Church Trusts God’s Big Plan for Their Future

Kathy O’Day, LCC Director of Disaster Response, spent time with Katie Bachman, a preschool teacher at Hope Lutheran Church in Bonita Springs, Florida. Katie’s family home has been condemned by the city of Bonita Springs. After the hurricane, she had several feet of water throughout her home and property for 3 weeks from the Imperial River which runs behind their home. The home is filled with dangerous black mold. It has been a very emotional and trying time as they grieve the loss of their belongings and treasured items. Currently, they are still living in a borrowed camper, but are thankful that they now can live on their own driveway, care for their 21 chickens, and soon monitor progress of the demolition and hopeful rebuilding of a new home. Site preparation and the rebuild will strain their finances greatly. Their faith is strong and they are trusting in God’s big plan to provide for their needs and give them peace in what will be a long recovery process.

LCC is your hands and feet, giving hope to individuals and families who continue to struggle in meeting their greatest needs. The recovery in these areas is long term. Your generous donations are making a difference in the lives of others!

Please donate now as a Friend in Christ to continue blessings others in His name!

CrownPoint Ministries Equips People to Help with Long-Term Recovery in Texas

11/7/2017

Picture
)CrownPoint Ministries will again be in the area of the Golden Triangle (Beaumont, Orange, and Port Arthur, Texas) “equipping” people in the churches to provide spiritual and emotional care, prayer, and presence during the long-term recovery from Hurricane Harvey. While the initial phases of “rescue, relief, and early recovery” have passed, the longer-term recovery and rebuilding bring about additional needs and challenges. We have a great mission field as we walk alongside all those who are still reeling from the wide scale nature of Hurricane Harvey. Members of the churches will grow in understanding how to provide support and ministry as survivors continue on their journey to a “new normal”. CarePartner Equipping is one of the key components of CrownPoint Ministries and is provided through the donations of caring and encouraging donors.

CrownPoint Ministries also has been doing CarePartner Equipping of RV’ers. The first event was held in early October and two others are in the process of being planned, one for January (probably in south central Texas and the other in February (likely in the greater Phoenix, Arizona area). Details about the dates and locations will be available soon.

To learn more about CrownPoint Ministries, check out the website HERE

Information on ChristPointe Care, CarePartners, and RV’ers are available on the website. If you have questions, please contact Dr. Lou Jander, [email protected] or via phone at (512) 629-7907.

May the Lord provide strength, hope, and comfort to all who are affected by natural and human caused disasters.

They served with a group led by Pastor David Jung from Crown of Life in Colleyville, Texas. Their task was to install wall board in a trailer in Nederland, Texas damaged by a fire and then water damage from Hurricane Harvey. The group extends a heartfelt thank you to St. John Lutheran Church in Beaumont, Texas for providing them with accommodations during their stay.

LCC Director of Disaster Response in Florida to Partner with the Amigos Center

Deac. Kathy O'Day, LCC Director of Disaster Response, and Mike Kinyon arrived in Florida on Monday, October 30, and immediately met with Pastor Karl Glander, Director of Amigos Center in Immokalee. He took them on a tour of hard hit areas his members live in. One particular area had many Haitian residents still living in a 16 unit apartment building that lost its roof and has only a blue tarp for protection. All of these units have extensive mold and should not be lived in, but they were repeatedly told, “There is nowhere else to go in Immokalee to rent. So we have to stay here.” The residents wanted to show Pastor Glander their homes and allowed LCC to take pictures, hoping that we can get some help for them.
One resident shared that she scrubs her walls every day to keep her home as clean as she can. A few weeks ago, Jan Boerman from Trinity – Lisle, Illinois and Pastor convinced most of these residents to get rid of their water soaked mattresses and bought all of them air mattresses. Hopefully the roof will be replaced soon and then LCC will partner with Amigos Center to replace beds and household items that were ruined.

Comfort Dogs Heal Las Vegas Shooting Victims

How does a community begin to heal in the aftermath of a mass shooting? On October 2nd, a day after a man opened fire on the Route 91 music festival, killing 58 and wounding hundreds, the LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs ministry deployed to Las Vegas. NBC Left Field followed a team of 22 golden retrievers as the dogs brought solace to victims, their families, first responders and the community at large.

Watch - short Documentary by NBC’s Left Field

Facebook post from NBC Left Field Director, Kitra Cahana:
A day following the mass shooting in Las Vegas the LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs deployed to console victims, their families, first responders and workers at the Mandalay Bay hotel. Ed Ou and I followed along and made this short film [Comfort Dogs Heal Las Vegas Shooting Victims].
I learnt so much from these dogs and their handlers about the power of embodying a still and calming presence. Be present with each other. PTSD and trauma live in our midst. We can all do our part in being a comfort for each other and de-stigmatizing PTSD and its effects.
Thank you to NBC Left Field for taking on this story and Elise Coker for your magic editing. William Ryan Fritch for your beautiful music. To all the individuals who let us film their private moments with the dogs and a big thank you to Elizabeth Libby Lambert Robertson, Rich, Tim and the whole Comfort Dog teams for being so open-hearted, present and having a ministry of no judgement. The way you support each other and those you come in contact with is something I will never forget. #vegastrong

Comment posted on LCC Facebook:

I "ran across" the Comfort Dogs at Mandalay Bay when I was in Vegas right after the horrible shooting. Each handler gave me the dog's "business card" and I posted the business card on my FB page the following day telling people how neat it was to see them. One of my friends in Montana told me last night that she was working with her young granddaughters with a Monday Night School (their version of Sunday School). She used the Bible verses as a "core" lesson plan, they looked up the verses and talked about what they meant. The girls are young, elementary school age. I'm not the greatest "Bible Student" and didn't understand some of the verses but took away what I needed to from one of them and I thought it was neat that a FB post about the Comfort Dogs ended up being a "lesson plan" for a couple little girls in Montana. Just thought you might want to know that the Nebraska and Colorado contingent of Comfort Dogs had a far reaching effect not only in Vegas but also in Helena, Missoula, and even Boise, Idaho. Have a good weekend everybody!
