LCC DISASTER RESPONSE SERVING HOMEOWNERS IN LOUISIANA WITH RECOVERY EFFORTS AFTER HURRICANE IDA9/21/2021
Working with LCMS Disaster Response, Districts & Churches to Help Impacted Individuals and Families with Recovery Efforts Ida, a Category 4 hurricane, produced winds up to 150 mph, 10 tornados, and historic flash flooding as it moved inland across eight states at the beginning of the month. FEMA is currently reporting 111 deaths attributed to this deadly hurricane. Some residents and businesses are still without power in multiple states, which may take another week to restore. Thousands of people have lost their homes, belongings, security, and hope. LCC L.E.R.T. disaster response teams are assisting the LCMS Southern District, working with Pastor Ed Brashier, Southern District Disaster Response Coordinator through Atonement Lutheran Church in Metairie and the Southern District Office in Slidell, Louisiana. LCC chainsaw L.E.R.T. volunteers, Tony Buchberger, Derek Kowalczyk, and Joel Powless spent this past week serving in Slidell, Hammond, Metairie, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, with a team from Texas. They describe extensive home and tree damage in each community they were in. They met several homeowners who told them although there is much more work to be done at their homes, they were grateful for help with tree removal and getting them started moving forward in their recovery. It gave them hope and an opportunity to see how the church serves those in need. Another LCC L.E.R.T. chainsaw team with equipment will be deploying next week to serve in these hard-hit communities. Pastor Ed is continuing to assess the damage and now welcoming and receiving L.E.R.T. volunteers from around the country to provide chainsaw assistance. More importantly, he and volunteer L.E.R.T. teams are offering the hope of Jesus Christ in the hard-hit communities of Metairie, Slidell, Lacombe, Houma, Baton Rouge, and other cities.
Please continue to pray for all of those affected by Hurricane Ida and the first responders, public works, volunteers, and LCMS and LCC Disaster Response teams who serve them. If you are so moved, please donate generously to help LCC support the recovery efforts in Louisiana. Lutheran Church Charities Disaster Response is ready to show the Mercy, Compassion, Presence and Proclamation of Jesus Christ to those suffering and in need. The LCC Disaster Response Ministry never charges those we serve. Please donate to the LCC Disaster Response General Fund or Equipment Maintenance & Fuel Expense Fund so that we may continue to show the Mercy, Compassion, Presence and Proclamation of Jesus Christ to those suffering and in need. LCC sent your donations to Pastor Phil Ressler for Pastor Dan Fenco and his family. We received this update from Pastor Ressler: I spoke with Dan, and he is greatly appreciative of the help. There will be some funds from his insurance as he looks for temporary housing. They are trying to find a place to live for the next year. That is the minimum amount of time it will take to rebuild if they are able to rebuild. There will need to be a determination by the city if the section of the town will be rezoned after the flooding. Pastor Fenco planted a Hispanic congregation in the New Jersey district, Camino De Fe. The church does not have a building, and they meet in homes. The loss of Pastor Fenco’s home has the additional effect of removing a home where the church regularly met. During this difficult time, Pastor Fenco and his family will continue to need support as they find housing and replace what was lost in the explosion. Insurance will cover some of the expense but not all of it. CLICK HERE to read the original appeal.
If you are so moved, please donate to help Pastor Fenco and his family recover from this devastating loss so he can continue to serve his congregation and community.
What a fantastic weekend for the LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry, as twelve new handlers were trained to be part of their churches' LCC K-9 Comfort Dog team. The handlers spent a lot of time learning new handling skills and building their knowledge about the ministry during the LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Replacement Handler Training. Each handler worked with either their affiliate’s dog or with a LCC K-9 Comfort Dog in training. LCC is happy to welcome the following new handlers: Chris Wehmeyer - Bethany, Austin, Texas with LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Martha Nicholas Cass - Faith, Lake Forest, Illinois with LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Asher Jana Buckley and Marci Nuoffer - First Good Shepherd, Las Vegas, Nevada with LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Lois Sherry Huntington - Immanuel, Belvidere, Illinois with LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Bekah John Moore - Island Lutheran, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina with LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Zoara Nicki Hett - Lord of Glory, Grayslake, Illinois with LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Tobias Laurel Kuplic - St. Michael’s Bloomington, Minnesota with LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Gideon Martin Kopatz - Trinity Auburn, Illinois with LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Dinah Jessica Berquist - Trinity Hobart, Indiana with LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Jael Janet Boye - Trinity, Lincoln, Nebraska with LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Priscilla Rachel Vonderheide - Lutheran High School Association of Greater Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin with LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Dora Please keep these new handlers in your prayers for God’s guidance as they go out to share with others, the Mercy, Compassion, Presence and Proclamation of Jesus Christ. "Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” Isaiah 6:8 On Saturday, September 18, LCC K-9 Comfort Dog teams traveled to Christ the King, Lake Ozark, Missouri, to share the mercy, compassion and presence of Jesus Christ to the family and friends of Pam and Dan Stephans as they said their final good-byes to their dear friends. LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs and their handlers from all over the Midwest were present to honor the lives of Pam and Dan. The congregation, family and friends were surrounded by the love and gentleness of LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Boaz (Christ the King - Lake Ozark, Missouri), Esther (Holy Cross - Collinsville, Illinois), Jessy (St. Paul’s - Concordia, Missouri), Joanna (Christ Lutheran - Lincoln, Nebraska), Job (Christ the King - Memphis, Tennessee), Katie (Trinity - Fremont, Nebraska), Moses (Christ Lutheran - Cairo, Nebraska), Noah (Timothy - St. Louis, Missouri), Persis (King of Kings - Glenpool, Oklahoma), Tabby (St. Paul’s - Des Peres, Missouri), and the support, compassion and presence of their handlers to bring light into this dark and sad time. Many of the Comfort Dogs wore a purple bandanna as a special remembrance to Pam whose favorite color was purple. Pam served as a ministry partner with LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Boaz and loved to serve others with Boaz and his handlers. And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” Luke 23:43 HURRICANE NICHOLAS HIT GULF COAST EARLY TUESDAY WITH STRONG WINDS AND HEAVY RAINFALL TO HARD-HIT AREA IN RECENT WEEKS Ida, a Category 4 hurricane, produced winds up to 150 mph, 10 tornados, and historic flash flooding as it moved inland across eight states at the beginning of the month. FEMA is currently reporting 111 deaths attributed to this deadly hurricane. Millions of residents and businesses are still without power in multiple states, which may take a few more weeks to restore. Thousands of people have lost their homes, belongings, security, and hope.
Currently, there is intermittent electricity, water pressure is extremely low, and the sewer systems are not operational until the end of the month in parts of Louisiana. This means that it is still difficult to get food, gas, and other essential items needed for residents and volunteers in some areas. Pastor Ed continues to assess the damage and now welcomes and receives L.E.R.T. volunteers from around the country to provide chainsaw assistance. More importantly, he and volunteer L.E.R.T. teams are offering the hope of Jesus Christ in the hard-hit communities of Metairie, Slidell, Lacombe, Houma, and other communities. Early Tuesday morning, Nicholas made landfall near Houston, Texas, as a Category 1 hurricane and continues to drop massive rain as a tropical storm making its way into Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. The slow-moving Nicholas will drop anticipated rainfall of 6 to 10 inches in Louisiana, with isolated totals reaching 15 to 20 inches. Flash flooding is expected. Please pray for L.E.R.T. teams who are helping affected homeowners during these difficult times. Please continue to pray for all of those affected by Hurricane Ida and Tropical Storm Nicholas and for all of the first responders, volunteers, and LCMS and LCC Disaster Response teams who serve them. If you are so moved, please donate generously to help LCC support the recovery efforts in these hard-hit communities. Lutheran Church Charities Disaster Response is ready to show the Mercy, Compassion, Presence and Proclamation of Jesus Christ to those suffering and in need.
