Running 4 Heroes

9/30/2019

On Saturday, September 28, LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Julia (King of Glory - Elgin, Illinois) attended the "Running 4 Heroes" 5K Run in Naperville, Illinois.

Zechariah, a young boy from Florida, came to Illinois for the event, and met with many first responders and family members of fallen heroes.

Zechariah has taken up the task of running a mile for every fallen first responder, and he carries a red or blue line flag as he runs.

Julia Comfort Dog was blessed to be there to offer comfort and support to everyone in attendance for this emotional event.

"...let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us." Hebrews 12:1

LCC LERT Teams Help a Single Parent in Grayslake, Illinois With Flood Recovery

9/24/2019

Last week, Kathy O’Day, LCC Director of Disaster Response and four Lutheran Early Response Team (LERT) members, Jim Beckley, Ron Jones, Steve MacKay and Bob Royce, spent two days helping a single parent in Grayslake, Illinois clean up her flooded basement and fixing some electrical issues a contractor had left incomplete. She is recovering from surgeries and a recent car accident, and could not do any of the work on her own nor did she have the means to do so.

Pastor Brian Davies from Lord of Glory Lutheran Church in Grayslake also came to meet her while the LERT team was working. He was able to provide pastoral care and introduce her to the church.

After all spent time showing her the mercy, compassion, presence and proclamation of Jesus Christ, her spirits were raised and she told us, “I finally have hope that things can get better and that people really do care enough to help others without expecting anything in return.”

She was thankful for the volunteers who cleaned her home, restored electricity to parts of her home, and for meeting a pastor and church who will continue to share the love and hope of Christ with her.

LCC never goes where we are not invited.
We NEVER charge those we serve.
We pick up all of our travel, hotel, and meals costs.
We put boots on the ground within 24 hours (often fewer) from the time we get the invite.

Woodfield Mall Deployment

9/24/2019

On Sunday, September 22, LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Emma (LCC Staff), Jacob (LCC Staff) and Ruthie (LCC Staff) deployed to Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, Illinois following an invitation by the management of the lululemon store inside the mall.

On Friday, September 20, shoppers and employees at the Woodfield Mall found themselves on lock down as the driver of an SUV drove his car through the Sears store entrance and then proceeded to drive into the mall crashing into storefronts  and kiosks leaving people to run for their lives.

The K-9s provided a much needed comfort to anxious employees and shoppers in the mall listening to their stories. Counselors will be present at several of the stores throughout the  week to help employees process the incident.

Honor Flight Chicago #94

9/23/2019

On Wednesday, September 18, LCC Kare 9 Military Ministry Dogs Blitz (LCC Squad), Brandy (LCC Squad), Brutus (LCC Squad), Nigel (LCC Staff), and LCC K-9 Comfort Dog-in-Training Rahab were, once again, part of the send-off for the veterans on Honor Flight Chicago #94 at Midway International Airport in Chicago, Illinois. The September flight carried 105 veterans from three wars that involved United States military:
  • 6 World War II veterans
  • 21 Korean War veterans
  • 78 Vietnam veterans
The oldest veteran of the day was 98-year-old 1st Lieutenant Clelia Ginay. Ginay was a World War II Navy nurse stationed in Jamaica, New York, and attached to an Army base in Fort Eustis, Virginia.

The Honor Flight organization is a network of regional “hubs” across the United States, each of which operates independently to provide a day of honor for military veterans. Founded in 2008, Honor Flight Chicago is the largest hub in the network.

As the veterans moved through five processing stations in the baggage claim area, they were greeted by the Kare 9s. Many truly enjoyed seeing them and asked to pet them.

In addition to helping to send the veterans off on their day in Washington, D.C., the LCC Kare 9 Military Ministry teams from Freeport and Northbrook (Illinois) supported the return flight Mail Call activity with 250 cards and notes written by ministry volunteers. On the way home, the veterans each receive a folder with letters from family, friends and community members.

It was a blessing to provide love and comfort to all the veterans on Honor Flight Chicago #94!
