The newest staff member at St. John Lutheran Church in Darien prefers to take her breaks romping around the church lawn or curled up on the office floor.
Shami, a 16-month-old golden retriever, arrived at St. John's last month and is much more than a parish pet, said Pastor Doug Swanson. She's a member of the church family and of the Darien community.
Trained in Michigan by Lutheran Church Charities of Addison, Shami is a service dog whose job is to be a friend to everyone she meets.

Sleeping Mat Ministry
Youth groups, senior groups, churches, and social clubs and organizations can all get involved in establishing a sleeping mat ministry. Lutheran Church Charities, a nonprofit, human care ministry of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, and based in Addison, Ill., has created a video that provides details about how to begin making sleeping mats for the homeless.
