Last Saturday afternoon Debbie and I went to Crystal Pines. Then in the evening I greeted at church. Anna and I joined six other Comfort Dogs for a worship service led by LCC at Stade's Farm Market near McHenry. We're invited back in September! Monday I spent time with Mary Jane. After T'ai Chi on Tuesday I stayed with Lynne in the office. Cheryl and Jerry took me to an American Legion meeting in DesPlaines. LCC staff member, Rich Martin showed pictures and talked about the ministry of the LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs and the places they have traveled. |

LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Visit Newtown H.S. |

Newtown H.S. principal Chip Dumais invited the LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs to the school's year end assembly on Friday June 14 . K-9 Comfort Dog sisters, Addie and Maggie, were on hand to represent all of the Comfort Dogs who had served the schools and communities of Newtown, CT after the tragic shootings. June 14 marked the 6 month anniversary of that day. Our LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs and their handlers have been honored to serve the children and families in Newtown and Sandy Hook Elementary. The kids had no idea the Comfort Dogs would be there and all cheered when they walked in. |

LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Visit Kinzie Elementary School |

Over 700 children attended assemblies at Kinzie Elementary School in Chicago to hear from Rich Martin about the LCC K-9 Comfort Dog's recent travels in Texas, Oklahoma, Boston, and Connecticut. They were met by K-9 Comfort Dogs Ruthie, Olympia, Darlin, and CDIT (Comfort Dog in Training) Jessy with handlers Hannah, Marlene, and Mark. The children held a fundraiser earlier in the year to support the Comfort Dog Ministry. |

LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs and Staff Returned to West, Texas |

Arriving on Thursday, June 13th, LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Luther and Ruthie, along with LCC staff members, Rich and Dona Martin and Dana Yocum, hit the ground running in Waco, Texas. They made a stop with runners at the "On the Run" store in Waco. They met with some runners who also participated in the Boston Marathon. Ruthie and Luther also shared time with K-9 members of the Hillcrest Therapy Dogs serving Waco and the surrounding communities.
Friday morning the team, accompanied by Pastor Bob Kitson of Trinity, Riesel, Texas started with a preschool visit at Grace Lutheran in Marlin, Texas and then returned to Lutheran Sunset Home in Clifton, Texas, where previous K-9 teams visited. Friday afternoon the team visited with children at Trinity Lutheran Church in Riesel.
Thrivent Financial in Waco, Texas held a K-9 Comfort Dog Fundraiser at the Tehuacana Creek Winery in Waco on Friday evening. TCV winery is owned by Ulf and Inga-Lill Westblom, members of Trinity, Riesel. Pastor Bob Kitson, his wife Sandy, and many members of Trinity, Riesel and surrounding churches helped prepare and serve over 200 people at the evening event. Special "Private Label" wines were available for purchase featuring Ruthie and Luther on the label and the K-9's were featured on etched stemware. The Comfort Dogs with Rich and Dona were the lead story on the 10pm Waco news on KWTX. LCC is very thankful to Sharon Koester and Tim Griesse from Thrivent who were instrumental in organizing and executing the event. Tim even played in his band for the evening.
Saturday the team revisited West, Texas the site of April's deadly fertilizer plant explosion. Together with Pastor Matthew Canion of St. Paul in Waco, Texas, the team toured Area 3 where great damage and loss occurred. The team also spent time at St. Mary's School in West where the Dallas Mavericks held a basketball and dance camp for hundreds of area children. Three of four area schools have been lost to the explosion. Afterwards the LCC K-9 Comfort Dog team visited the Long Term Recovery center in West and met with a woman who had lost her home in the explosion. Your continued prayers are needed for this community and families as they start the process of rebuilding their homes and lives after this devastating tragedy.

Lutheran Church Charities K-9 Training of Trainers Course |

The K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry is expanding by establishing its own school to educate future K-9 Comfort Dog Trainers. By doing this we can keep up with the number of requests for LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs, and we can do an even better job of training and regulating our standards for our Comfort Dogs! All important things to do as we continue to grow and place our LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs in more States.
So, we are accepting applications NOW from individuals interested in joining us in this endeavor. There will be a limited number of people we can train so if you are interested, please fill out the application soon. The Training program will be offered in the Chicagoland, Illinois area.

Successful Visit to West, Texas |

The team has arrived back in Chicago following the long weekend spent in Waco and West, Texas. Their time spent there visiting with the community at the fundraiser and the clinic, along with various other visits to pre-schools and nursing homes, was greatly appreciated! The dogs were a hit and loved by all.
LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Luther and Ruthie returned to West, Texas to bring more comfort to the community following the April 17th, 2013 fertilizer plant explosion. They spent time with many of the students from West Elementary School, which was destroyed in the explosion as well as a group of runners that were in the Boston Marathon and experienced the bombings there. On Saturday, June 15th, the group, including staff members Rich and Dona Martin and Dana Yocum, were at a camp in West, TX where the Dallas Mavericks were there to teach basketball skills to kids and the Maverick's Dancers put on dancing clinics.
On Friday night, June 14th, the LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs were recognized in Waco, TX at a successful fundraiser put on by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans from Waco, Texas. A special thank you to Sharon from Thrivent for putting on this event and for all her work to make the event a reality. Their support will help the K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry share the Mercy, Compassion, Presence and Proclamation of Jesus Christ with more people in their time of need. Last Saturday morning, June 1, Cliff and I helped my friends, LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Olympia and Ruthie greet the people coming to the Round Lake Library. In the afternoon, Kathy and I went to Crystal Pines. On Sunday I greeted at church. Monday I spent time with Mary Jane. After T'ai Chi on Tuesday I stayed with Lynne in the office. What a busy place! I hardly got a nap! It was fun to see Jackie, Marianne, and Don. |

K-9 volunteer handlers were also there with LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Chloe, Ladel, Tara, Butter, Chewie, Shami and Kye. A special thank you to Jeanine Weintz, accompanied by Graffiti Unlimited, for her music and dedication to the K-9 Comfort Dogs. |

LCC Receives Check, Dog Basket of Goodies and Free-Will Offering from St. Paul Lutheran, Thornton, Illinois |

On Sunday, June 9, LCC staff members Dona and Rich Martin did a K-9 presentation on the K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry to the congregation at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Thornton, Illinois prior to their service. They focused on their response to the many disasters this year. The congregation was so excited to have K-9 Comfort Dogs Ruthie and Olympia join them. Ruthie and Olympia even got to help with the Children's Message. The congregation also supported the LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry with a donation of financial support, a basket of goodies for the dogs and a free-will offering. |

LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Visit St. James Lutheran School, Chicago |

On Thursday, June 6th, the 5th - 8th grade students at St. James Lutheran School in Chicago had a nice surprise for the end of their school year. The LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs paid them a visit. LCC staff member, Dona Martin, did a K-9 presentation on the LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry. The students learned more about what it means to have the Comfort Dogs out in communities, especially after disasters have accrued. Then the students had a chance to visit K-9 Comfort Dogs - JoJo (Living Christ A.H), Jessy (K-9 Comfort Dog in training), Chewie, and Ruthie. |

Third Team of K-9 Comfort Dogs and Handlers Return Home from Oklahoma |

After another successful visit by the LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs this week in Moore, Oklahoma and its surrounding communities, the team has landed back in Chicago, IL and Davenport, IA. They spent much of the week visiting the Crisis and Relief Centers, bringing comfort to the displaced and hurting people. They also walked the communities and handed out Visa Gift Cards that were donated from St. Paul Lutheran Church, Mt. Prospect, IL.
LCC thanks the owner of a private plane (who generously donated time and expenses) and flew the Chicago group, LCC staff member Rich Martin with K-9 Comfort Dog Luther, LCC Volunteer Sharon Flaherty with K-9 Comfort Dog Susie, and Barb Granado with K-9 Comfort Dog Hannah, back to Chicago. Susie enjoyed watching the clouds go by from her window seat! The team from Trinity Lutheran Church, Davenport, IA - Bill Meyer and Rick Holste - has returned to Iowa with Gracie Comfort Dog.
LCC and our wonderful supporters keep all those in Oklahoma who have been affected by the tornadoes in our thoughts and prayers. May God bless them and aid in their recovery. |

The Lutheran Church Charities K-9 Comfort Dogs Respond to Oklahoma Tornadoes |

On Tuesday, May 21st, six LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs and their handlers departed from Addison, Illinois for Moore, Oklahoma to respond to the tornadoes that devastated Moore and the surrounding communities. On Wednesday the teams met with Pastor Mark Bersche of St. John's Lutheran Church in Moore, Pastor Mark Muenchow of Messiah Lutheran Church and School in Oklahoma City, and Pastor Steve Lee of Peace Officer Ministries to determine where to best serve the people of Oklahoma.
By the afternoon, the teams were
visiting victims in the pediatric and adult floors of the Oklahoma University Medical Center - Click to View CNN Segment. K-9 Comfort Dogs Ruthie, Kye, Bekah, Zeke, Lila, and Barnabas continued their rounds with visits to people in multiple relief centers (in Moore and other communities), police and fire stations, and with countless families being housed in dorms at Oklahoma University. At the end of the week, the team was joined by K-9's Jackson and Louie from Joplin, Missouri and Moses from Cairo, Nebraska. In total, nine K-9's and their handlers, representing four states, joined in the response. LCC will continue to serve Oklahoma with the Comfort Dogs.

K-9 Comfort Dog Visit to St.Paul, Chicago |

On Sunday, May 26, LCC staff members Marshal and Kolyssa Frisque, along with LCC K-9 Comfort Dog in Training Zoey, visited the Sunday School students and Bible study members at St. Paul Lutheran Church 5650 N Canfield Ave, Chicago, Illinois. The Sunday School students designated their offerings to the K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry and Marshal presented to the group. |

LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Tara Visits Special Olympics |

On Sunday, April 28th, Comfort Dog Tara and handler LCC staff member Marie Payes, visited the Special Olympics Illinois Area 18 (Northwest Suburban Chicago) Annual Spring Games-Track and Field Competition in Mt. Prospect. There were more than 700 athletes, 1,200 volunteers and nearly 3,000 spectators. Tara and Marie greeted athletes, volunteers and visitors at the Hospitality Tent. This was the 18th year that Immanuel Lutheran Church and School in Palatine has sponsored the Hospitality Tent. |

K-9 Comfort Dogs Visit St. John, Elgin |

The K-9 Comfort Dogs are invited to St John Lutheran Church in Elgin, Illinois every year and the dogs love the visit. This year Pastor Roger Pollock did the chapel message for the students on comfort. After chapel the students had a chance to visit with K-9 Comfort Dogs Chewie and Tillie. |
